• 1. Before attempting to unblock the toilet, lay out newspaper and old towels on the floor around the toilet in case it overflows.
  • 2. Pour half a mug of washing up liquid into the bowl, dripping it around the bowl so it forms a ring around the waterline.
  • 3. Leave it for around half an hour to begin dissolving the blockage.
  • 4. Pour a bucket of hot water into the toilet bowl from waist height. Care should be taken not to cause the toilet to overflow.
  • 5. The volume of water should force the blockage down the u-bend.
  • 6. Leave for a further 10 minutes and then flush.
