• 1. Before attempting to unblock the toilet, lay out newspaper and old towels on the floor around the bowl in case it overflows. Also a good idea to wear rubber gloves.

For this method you will need a toilet plunger. Toilet plungers have a fold out flange that folds up into the plunger cup when not in use – plungers without this flange are for sinks.
  • 2. First soften the rubber of the plunger in hot water to make it more flexible. Take the toilet plunger and form an airtight seal around the outflow of the toilet bowl. Ensure the water is completely submerging the rubber and that there is an airtight seal between the plunger cup and the toilet. Pump the plunger up and down creating a vacuum which will dislodge the blockage.
  • 3. This will move the water and air against the blockage and break it apart.
  • 4. Hopefully the blockage should have broken apart enough to flush away.
NOTE: When you have finished with the plunger, ensure that it is fully cleaned before it's put back into storage.
