Fixing a broken flush mechanism
- 1. In identifying the problem with the cistern, the first thing to check is that the mains water supply is running correctly. Run a cold water tap and confirm that the water is flowing (remembering to turn the tap off after the test). If there is no water flowing from the cold water taps then the problem is with the mains supply and not the toilet cistern.
- 2. In normal operation, pulling down on the flush handle should cause water to flow into the toilet bowl.
- 3. After the flush has forced water down the toilet bowl, the cistern should refill with water.
- 4. First shut off the water supply to the cistern. There should be a shut-off valve on the inlet water pipe, using a flat head screwdriver, turn it 90° and check the water flow has shut off by gently pushing down on the float to ensure there is no longer any water flowing.
If there is no shut-off valve, you will have to turn the water off at the stopcock and run the cold water tap until the water flow stops.
For more information see the topic Shutting off the water supply - 5. If the Siphon Valve has broken, then you will have to manually bail out the water from the cistern. Remove ALL water, as soon as you unattach the water pipe between the cistern and the toilet bowl any water remaining in the cistern will leak over the floor.
- 6. Disconnect the link between the flush mechanism and the trip lever.
- 7. Remove the Locking Nut connecting the water Outflow Pipe and the Cistern / flush mechanism.
- 8. Disconnect the Outflow Pipe.
- 9. Remove the Siphon Valve.
- 10. Put in the new Siphon Valve.
- 11. Attach the water Outflow Pipe.
- 12. Replace the Locking Nut connecting the water Outflow Pipe and the Cistern / Siphon Valve.
- 13. Reconnect the link between the flush mechanism and the trip lever. Work the handle to check the tension feels right, it shouldn't be too loose or too tight.
- 14. Turn the water back on and the cistern should now refill with water.
