Checking the cistern
- 1. Before attempting to unblock the toilet, layout newspaper and old towels on the floor around the bowl in case it overflows.
- 2. Is the mains water supply working correctly? If you run the cold taps is there the usual flow of water. If there is no water, then the problem is with the mains water supply.
- 3. When you flush does water flow from the cistern?
- 4. The full water level in the cistern should be an inch below the overflow pipe. If the water is lower than this, then there may be a problem with the inlet valve.
- 5. If the water level is significantly low, look at the float mechanism. Is it on top of the water or is it stuck? If it is stuck, check to see if the float mechanism is touching part of the cistern preventing it from rising. Readjust the shaft holding the float by carefully bending it so it is clear of any obstructions.
- 6. If it is clear of any obstructions, push the float up and down to see if the hinge has become fouled with limescale.
- 7. If the water is constantly running through the overflow pipe then the float height is adjusted incorrectly. Flush the toilet and watch the float rise, when the water is an inch below the top of the overflow pipe stop the float from rising any further and adjust the float height screw until it pushes the inlet valve button in and shuts off the water flow.
