A burning smell comes from my dryer
- Please make sure you follow these instructions fully. If you have any problems with carrying out this maintenance, please contact us.
A build up of lint and fluff in your dryer or incorrect loading can lead to a burning smell. See the “Cleaning the lint filter” and “Loading the tumble dryer” topics for further information.
Always check the user manual for details of this for your specific dryer, but this guide will give you some general advice.
You can also see our ‘How to…’ videos, which include some general advice on adjusting the feet of an appliance (double-click the video to view it ‘full screen’). - 1. Make sure that your dryer has not been overloaded. This may cause garments to get trapped between the door seal and the drum which creates friction when the machine starts to work. This can create a burning rubber smell and even smoke.
- 2. Check the lint or fluff filter found in the door recess and remove any fluff build up.
- 3. Check the dryerʼs inlet, outlet and vent pipe for fluff and lint build up as this may restrict airflow through the dryer, if fluff and lint debris get too hot, they may create a burning smell.
- 4. If you have a condenser dryer, remove the lower cover to reveal the condenser. Remove the condenser by turning the clips and pulling it out. Wash out all of the fluff build up by flushing water through the slots in the condenser under a tap. Also see the “Cleaning the condenser” topic for further information.
- 5. Re-fit everything and try the dryer again, the smell may take a few minutes to clear.

If you have misplaced or lost your user manual, you can download a replacement manual (please have your model number to hand).
