Making best use of your energy costs and caring for the environment can both be helped by taking some simple steps.
Always check the user manual for any recommendations on your specific dishwasher but the steps below will give you some general guidance.
1. You can save water and energy by only starting a wash cycle when the dishwasher is full. While the dishwasher is being filled, you can prevent unpleasant odours by using a ‘soak’ cycle if your dishwasher has this feature (check your user manual for details).
Always use a wash cycle that is suited to the type of items being washed and to how dirty the items are.
For dishes with a normal soil level, your dishwasher may have an ‘eco’ or similar wash cycle, which uses less energy and water (check your user manual for details).
Or, if the load to be washed is smaller than usual, your dishwasher may have a ‘small load’ or ‘half load’ setting (check your user manual for details).
If your electricity supply contract has electricity-saving time-band tariffs, you can run wash cycles during the periods when a lower tariff is applied. Your dishwasher may have a delayed start option to help with this so that you can arrange the wash cycles to match the lower costs (check your user manual for details).
2. Phosphate-free and chlorine-free detergents containing enzymes can help reduce damage to the environment and even biodegradable detergents often contain substances that may alter the balance of nature.
It is generally recommended that you use detergents which do not contain phosphates or chlorine, as these products are known to be harmful to the environment.
Detergents containing enzymes are particularly effective at lower temperatures (around 50°C) and can be used in conjunction with low-temperature wash cycles in order to achieve the same results as normal 65°C washing.
To help avoid wasting detergent, use it as recommended by the manufacturer and always pay attention to the hardness of the water, the quantity of the items being washed and how dirty they are. Also see the ”Measuring out the detergent“ topic for further information.
