My gas cooker or hob burners wonʼt light

Please make sure you follow these instructions fully. If you have any problems with carrying out this maintenance, please contact us.

Always make sure that your cooker or hob has completely cooled down before starting any maintenance or cleaning.

Check for specific details on your appliance in the user manual, but the steps below will give you general guidance.

Do not interfere with the gas supply to your cooker or hob. This must only be undertaken by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you are in any doubt, do not undertake this maintenance task.

Even with regular wiping down and cleaning, over time your cookerʼs hob will build up grease and grime that may impact cooking functions or even prevent a gas oven or hob from igniting. The steps below will give you more information on how to clean the gas burners safely and efficiently.

1. If you cannot see a spark or hear a click from the ignition sparker, check that the electricity to the socket is switched on. You may need to check both the individual switch and the mains fuse box (or consumer unit) to ensure the electricity supply to the cooker or hob is on.

2. Check that the gas supply is turned on and that the burner holes are clean, dry and free from debris. If the gas holes are blocked, this can stop the gas and prevent ignition. Clean out the holes with a tooth pick or similar utensil and try again.

For more information see the “Cleaning the burners” topic.

3. Check the igniter is clean, dry and free from debris. Dirt and debris around the igniter may prevent the spark from igniting the gas. Clean the igniter using a small nylon brush such as an old toothbrush and try lighting again.

For more information, see the “Cleaning the burners” topic.

4. Check all burner parts are aligned correctly.
Some gas cookers have a gas burner safety device to stop any gas leakage should the flame go out whilst cooking. Failure to align all parts correctly may result in the safety device stopping gas from being released.

5. If your cooker is fitted with a hotplate lid (glass that sits on top of the burners when not in use), check that this is lifted fully open. Some hotplate lids are fitted with a safety device which cuts off the gas supply until the lid is fully open.

6. Your cooker may have functions such as a child lock or manual timer. Check these functions are not switched on as this will stop the ignition system from working.

7. Check for strong draughts near the appliance as this may be affecting the lighting of the gas burner.
