Always check the user manual for information on your specific appliance, but the points below will give you some general guidance.

Most modern appliances now show their energy rating information, often in the user manual and also on a sticker on the appliance itself. The standard ratings range from A+++ through to D.

Many washer dryer energy labels will also show you additional useful information, such as annual water consumption (shown in litres), the drum capacity (shown in kilograms), noise emission (shown in decibels) and efficiency of its spin drying (generally marked from A to G).Something to be aware of with washer dryers is that they use water to cool the tumble dryer and this usage may not be reflected in the water consumption information. Cold water is pumped around the condenser until the water becomes hot, it is then drained and replaced with fresh cold water.

The costs of operating your washer dryer can be an important consideration, so the energy-use information can be very useful and will normally give you a guide to annual energy consumption based upon estimated usage.
  • 1. Seeing the amount of energy your washer dryer will use can inform you how efficient it will be in normal use. The highest A+++ rated appliances use the least amount of energy and so are the best at being most efficient, as well as being kinder to the environment and costing you less to use.
  • 2. Different types of appliance will be different in the way they work, so different ways of calculating the ratings have been devised. For example, the energy use for an A+++ rated washer dryer across a typical year is based on 220 wash cycles. Checking the amount of electricity used (measured in Kilowatt Hours -‘kWh’- which are the ‘units’ the electricity-supply companies use for their billing) for an average year can allow you to work out an indication of your washer dryerʼs running costs (the example A+++ washer dryer mentioned, uses about 135kWh in its typical example year).
  • If you have misplaced or lost your user manual, you can download a replacement manual (please have your model number to hand).
